A brief review of China’s practice on design theory and procedure is presented. Alternative mechanistic models and analytic methods and their adaptability for analyzing stresses in slabs are discussed. The design procedure suggested adopts the combined fatigue damage due to repeated loads and thermal stresses as design criteria, and introduces a reliability factor for considering the impact of variability level of design parameters and desired level of reliability upon pavement design.
