A simple two-step synthesis of Fe2O3 hollow micro spheres and their magnetic properties

Abstract:Fe2O3 microspheres with core-shell structure have been synthesized by a simple two-step method of hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the samples are quite in agreement with the standard pattern of the hexagonal rhomb-centered 冄-Fe2O3. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal that those spheres are of core-shell structure with a hole on the shell surface. Magnetic hysteresis measurement carried out by vibrant sample magnetometer (VSM) shows that the as-synthesized 冄-Fe2O3 microspheres display weak ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. The possible formation mechanism of the core-shell structure is discussed on the basis of the obtained experimental results.
