Colloidal-sol gel derived rough Mn-TCP/FHA coatings with high adhesion strength

Abstract:In this work, composite calcium phosphate coatings containing Manganese ions are prepared through a colloidal-sol gel method. Mn containing 僴円-tricalcium phosphate powders are embedded in a fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA) matrix to form Mn-TCP-FHA composites via colloidal-sol gel method. This composite layer is deposited on top of a FHA layer to form a Mn-TCP-FHA/FHA biphasic coating. The powder incorporation not only impart the coatings with Mn releasing ability, but also greatly increases the surface roughness. However, due to the mismatch of coefficients of thermale expanion (CTE), some cracks could be observed in the coatings. Despite that, the bottom FHA layer effectively buffered such mismatch, the adhesion strength of the coatings with the substrate remains virtually constant: over 400 mN in scanning scratch test.
