ABR Traffic Control over ATM Network Using a Two-Degree-of-Freedom Smith Predictor

Abstract:A new rate-based congestion control algorithm is developed by using a two-degree-of- freedom Smith predictor for available bit rate (ABR) traffic control over high speed asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks with large propagation delays. An analytical design procedure is given based on the optimization. The nominal setpoint response of the system is decoupled from its disturbance response. The new scheme is simple and transparent in its ability to cope with the performance and robust stability issues of the ABR traffic control system. An anti-windup scheme is also presented to avoid the occurrence of windup.
