Salinity problems in coastal aquifers in areas of port-Sudan, Northeastern Sudan
首发时间:2010-02-12
Abstract:Chemical analysis of groundwater in two separate areas of the coastal city of Port-Sudan, Red Sea State of Sudan, was carried out in order to determine the chemical distribution of the groundwater and evaluate the rate of saline water migration. Nineteen (19) samples were collected from the area of Suakin close to Red sea and creeks (Group A) and from an inland area called Tokar (Group B). Samples of group ‘A’ are dominated by Na Cl and have average TDS of approximately 200 mg/l; samples from group ‘B’ are weakly mineralized (TDS approximately 50 mg/l), although still dominated by Na Cl. The study indicates that groundwater closer to the sea is affected by saline intrusion. Comparison of the groundwater chemistry of the group A samples in this study with samples from the same study area in 1990 show a deterioration in groundwater quality in the past 18 years.
