Effect of fabrication processes on the mechanical properties of a SiC reinforced pure aluminum composite

Abstract:In this paper, a SiC reinforced pure aluminum composite was fabricated by two different processes. It has been shown that the composite fabricated by the VHPE process shows much higher yield strength, tensile strength and elongation than the composite fabricated by the CPVSE process. Optical microscopy observation showed that the CPVSE fabricated composite has more pores than the VHPE fabricated composite. Tensile fracture surface observation indicated that the VHPE fabricated composite has higher interfacial cohesion strength than the CPVSE fabricated composite. Less pores and higher interfacial cohesion strength help improve the strength and plasticity of the composite fabricated by the VHPE process.
