Facile creation of bio-inspired superhydrophobic and superoleophilic polyurethane foam surfaces

Abstract:A bio-inspired synthesis strategy was conducted to fabricate superhydrophobic and superoleophilic polyurethane foam surfaces with self-cleaning properties and oil/water separation capability. In this contribution, the micro-nanoscale structure first constructed on polyurethane foam surfaces, and then the resultant surface multiscale structures were modified with low surface energy fluoroalkylsilane (FAS). Surface structures and wettability were characterized by combining environmental scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements. Research indicated that both surface multiscale structures and the low surface free energy coating result in the final formation of superhydrophobicity.
