Impact of Electro-osmosis with Metal and Noble Electrode on Swelling properties of Bentonite

Abstract:Electro-osmosis may have impact on the swelling properties of bentonite. Electro-osmosis experiments using iron, black carbon and EKG electrodes were carried out. Result shows that electro-osmosis using iron electrodes may reduce swelling property of soil around anode but in crease that around cathode. Electro-osmosis using noble electrodes may increase swelling property of soil around both anode and cathode if the conductivity of electrodes is not very low. Electro-osmosis with different types of electrodes may have different impact of altering the crystal structure of clay minerals. Further research with purified clay minerals are recommended.
