Grain Refinement and Texture Control of the As-cast Mg Alloy to Improve the Hot-rolling Capability

Abstract:A pre-treatment of multi-pass cross compression is employed to refine the grain and modify texture of the as-cast AZ31 Mg alloy to improve the hot rolling capability. The application of cross compression along the rolling direction (RD) and the transverse direction (TD) can generate much higher accumulated strain compared to that by the monotonic directional compression, which greatly contributes to refine the huge grain before hot-rolling. The cross compression along RD and TD also form the texture with c-axis of most grains nearly perpendicular to the thickness reduction direction. The effectively refined grains and the specific texture by pre-treated sample effectively enhance the hot-rolling capability at 400 C. The texture and microstructure evolutions of samples during the hot rolling process are also addressed.
