A study on the conformation transition of polyacrylic acid in its aqueous solution by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy

Abstract:In this paper, the conformation transition of an annealed polyelectrolytes, polyacrylic acid (PAA), was studied by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy in its aqueous solution. The influence of pH, counterions concentration and valence on the conformation transition was investigated. The results revealed that PAA undergoes a continuous conformational transition between pH 6 and 3 from an extended coiled structure to a collapsed globule conformation. The conformational transition can also be achieved by increasing the counterions concentration. The dependence of hydrodynamic radius on the Debye screening length are determined. The results were compared with quenched polyelectrolytes. "Ion-bridging effect" was founded when added multi-valent counterion. A series about the interaction ability of multivalent counterions and PAA was founded: La3+>Ba2+>Sr2+≈Ca2+>Mg2+. An evidence of re-entrant transition of PAA with Mg2+ ion was also discovered.

摘要:本文研究了一种亲水性的弱聚电解质聚丙烯酸的构象转变。研究了溶液的pH值、抗衡离子的浓度以及价态对其构象的影响,并与淬火型聚电解质的结果进行了比较。结果发现,排除盐的效应,改变溶液的pH值使得PAA的构象在从pH值从6到3的一个很宽的范围发生由伸展线团至坍缩链球构象的连续转变。增加盐浓度也会导致PAA分子链的塌缩。在一价盐的实验中观察到了盐促进PAA电离的效应。高价盐的实验中,我们观察到了高价盐的"桥接效应",同时得到了高价盐与聚丙烯酸作用强弱的一个次序:La3+>Ba2+>Sr2+≈Ca2+>Mg2+。
