The improvement of teaching experience in Mixed-level classes
Abstract:Mixed-level classes can be a nightmare for teachers, as it is really hard to get full control of classes as they may have too much to care about, such as the varied backgrounds, interests, personalities, motivations, and language abilities of students. This paper intends to use the problems the writer met in college English teaching to talk about some practical procedures that teachers can use to manage such kind of classes. Within the 38 students in class, 30 are retake students---sophomore and junior students who failed this course at least once in the past and 8 are freshmen owning better English skills. The latter ones are assigned into this class only because there are not enough students to form a new class of which the minimum number of students is 10. Half of them are local Macau citizens, while the other half are from different parts of Mainland China. They all belong to the same faculty but with distinct majors. … In a word, they are very different from each other. Therefore, the author spends much time on identifying their features, like language levels and motivations, and dividing them into several groups, aiming at personalize their exercises and find out the opinion leaders of each group to help promote the communication between the teacher and the whole class. Some procedures really work and some still need improvements.
