Numerical study on gaseous hydrogen behavior released in a gas station from LH2 carrier

Abstract:The use of liquid hydrogen, although very promising in terms of automotive applications, raises safety issues for transport and storage, especially in confined spaces. This thesis studies the release and dispersion behavior of hydrogen in a gas station from a 150 mm diameter safety valve of a liquid hydrogen tank using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software FLOW-3D. The model is designed to study the velocity, temperature, and hydrogen concentration over time. A sensitivity test is carried out to investigate the influences from wind direction and velocity, different mass flow rates, and release temperatures. The geometry of the situation and the wind and its velocity showed to have the most influence on the hydrogen dispersion while the temperature showed only a limited influence.
