Hollow TiO2 nanoparticles have been successfully prepared in a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) of 1-buty-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoraborate ([Bmim]BF4) system. The effect of thermal treatment on morphology and phase was investigated. The morphology of anatase particles varied greatly depending on the temperature of thermal treatment, but the anatase phase are stable up to 800℃. The photocatalytic activity of the samples were tested for the degradation of rhodamine B. The hollow TiO2 nanoparticle prepared with ionic liquid have higher photocatalytic activity, and hollow TiO2 nanoparticle calcined at 450℃ show a better photocatalytic performance than the others.

The weathering stability of wood during long-term exposure to outdoor atmosphere is an important issue. Topcoat is one of the crucial methods for protecting wood polymer substrates from environmental factors, such as solar radiation and moisture. In the present study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating was synthesized on wood surface using the hydrothermal method to improve its weathering resistance capability. Both the TiO2-coated and control wood were exposed to artificial accelerated weathering for 40 circles (nearly 1 000 h). Color measurements were conducted at intervals throughout the test period, and presented in ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*, and overall color changes (ΔE). Results show that the TiO2-coated wood had better color stability than the control wood. This demonstrates the ability of TiO2 coating to retard color change in wood. Furthermore, the stimulus and opalescence of TiO2 resulted in a whitening effect on the wood after 100 h of exposure. The compositional changes on the wood surface were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The differences in absorption intensity at 1640 and 1375 cm?1 between the TiO2-coated and control wood suggest the positive contribution of the TiO2 coating to the compositional stability of lignin during the weathering aging process.

One-dimensional titania nanotube arrays were prepared in the electrolyte containing F- via electrochemical anodization method. FESEM analysis indicated that 1.2µm length TiO2 nanotubes were obtained at anodizing voltage 20V for 2h, and the average pore diameter and wall thickness came to 60nm and 30nm. A possible growth mechanism of titania nanotube arrays was simply presented. TiO2 nanotube arrays annealed at 500°C in an oxygen atmosphere showed good sensitivity to acetone vapor. The sensitivity changed with the testing temperature and the concentration of acetone vapor. The sensitivity to 120ppm acetone gas was 298 at the testing temperature of 270°C. The titania nanotube arrays can be a promising option for microconcentration of acetone gas sensors used for medical detection.

Mesoporous titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon microspheres were synthesized by a simple nanocasting route using monodisperse silicon dioxide microspheres as the template. The characterize and the morphology of the titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon microspheres have been analyzed by means of XRD, N2-sorption, SEM, TEM, TG-DTA and EDAX. Indicated by the experimental results and the theoretical analysis, the anatase titanium dioxide nanoparticles of 8-14 nm in diameter were highly dispersed in the graphitic carbon microspheres. The obtained material can be used as catalyst or battery material.
