In this paper, we introduce the notion of Minkowski symmetric Lie algebras to give an algebraic description of symmetric Berwald spaces. As an application, we study some geometric properties of these spaces. In particular, we generalize an elegant result of E. Cartan on the sectional curvature of Riemannian symmetric spaces to the ag curvature of symmetric Berwald spaces.
