Neuropsychological characteristics of selective attention in children with nonverbal learning disabilities
Chinese Medical Journal 2004; 117 (12): 1834-1837,-0001,():
ChiIdren with nonverbaI Iearning disabiIities (NLD)usuaIIy manifest defective attention function. This study sought to investigate the neuropsychoIogicaI characteristics of seIective attention, such as attention controI, working memory, and attention persistence of the frontaI Iobe in chiIdren withNLD. using the auditory detection test (ADT), Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST), and CWISC, 27 chiIdren with NLD and 33 normaI chiIdren in the controI group were tested, and the resuItsof C-WISC subtests were anaIyzed with factor anaIysis. 0, (1-Compared with the controI group, the correct response rate in the auditory detection test in the NLD group was much Iower (P<0.01), and the number of incorrect responses was much higher (P<0.01); NLD chiIdren aIso scored Iower in WCST categories achieved (CA)and perseverative errors (PE) (P<0.05). Factor anaIysis showed that perceptuaI organization (PO) reIated to visuaI space and freedom from distractibiIity (FD) reIating to attention persistence in the NLD group were obviousIy Iower than in the controI group (P<0.01). ChiIdren with NLD have attention controI disorder and working memory disorder mainIy in the frontaI Iobe. We beIieve that the disorder is particuIarIy prominent in the right frontaI Iobe.
