Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important pathogen in nosocomial infections. Although vancomycin is highly active and has been the drug of choice in the treatment of serious MRSA infections, it unfortunately has the potential to cause serious adverse effects. Fluoroquinolones exhibit potenl in vitro activity against MRSA. and they have been used in the treatment of mild and moderate infections caused by this organism. However, resistance may very soon develop. Our previous study showed that the mechanism of resistance to quinolones in MRSA was due to alteration in DNA gyrase subunit A.[1] In the present study, we report on ciprofloxacin up-take by quinolone-resistant MRSA and the rela-tionship with quinolone resistance.
