We present the photophysical properties of complexes of recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA) with Zn(II)-protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP) and their activities in the photosensitized reduction of water to hydrogen (H2) using methyl viologen (MV2+) as an electron relay. The ZnPP is bound in subdomain IB of wild-type rHSA [rHSA(wt)] by an axial coordination of Tyr-161 and, in the rHSA(I142H/Y161L) mutant [rHSA(His)], by a His-142 coordination. Both the rHSA(wt)- ZnPP and rHSA(His) -ZnPP complexes showed a long-lived photoexcited triplet state with lifetimes (гT) of 11 and 2.5 ms, respectively. The accommodation of ZnPP into the protein matrix efficiently eliminated the collisional triplet self-quenching process. The addition of a water-soluble electron acceptor, MV2+ , resulted in a significant decrease in the triplet lifetime. The transition absorption spectrum revealed the oxidative quenching of rHSA-3ZnPP by MV2+. The quenching rate constant (kq) and backward electron transfer rate constant (kb) were determined to be 1.4×107 and 4.7 ×108 M-1 s -1 for rHSA(wt) ZnPP. In the presence of the colloidal PVA-Pt as a catalyst and triethanolamine (TEOA) as a sacrificial electron donor, the photosensitized reduction of water to H2 takes place. The efficiency of the photoproduction of H2 was greater than that of the system using the well-known organic chromophore, tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl) porphinatozinc (II) (ZnTMPyP4+), under the same conditions.

A new kind of Co–Na heterodinuclear polymer complex based on Salen Schiff base and crown ether has been successfully prepared by condensation polymerization. Its catalytic behavior for aerobic oxidation of cyclohexene, alkylbenzenes and linear aliphatic olefins was studied in the absence of any solvents or reducing agents under mild conditions. The oxidation of cyclohexene catalyzed by the above catalyst proved to be a simple and efficient method for obtaining 2-cyclohexen-1-one (C=O) and 2-cyclohexen-ol (-OH) in a high selectivity. Kinetics of the oxidation was also investigated. The results showed that the aerobic oxidation of cyclohexene catalyzed by Salen-crown ether heterodinuclear polymer complex follows a radical chain aerobic oxidation mechanism. This oxidation system is also efficient in the oxidation of alkylbenzenes and linear aliphatic olefins, which afforded corresponding benzylic oxidation products and epoxides, respectively.

Tetrakis{( ɑ, ɑ, ɑ, ɑ-o-pivalamido)phenyl}porphinatoiron(II) with a bifunctional tail possessing an axially coordinated imidazolyl group and a protein attachable succinimidyl(glutamyl) group (FeP-GluSu) has been synthesized. It can efficiently react with the lysine residues of recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA), giving a new albumin-heme conjugate [rHSA(FeP-Glu)]. MALDI-TOFMS showed a distinct molecular ion peak at m/z 70 643, which indicates that three FeP-Glu molecules were covalently linked to the rHSA scaffold. The binding number of FeP-Glu is approximately three (mol/mol) and independent of the mixing ratio. The CD spectrum and Native PAGE revealed that the albumin structure remained unaltered after the covalent bonding of the hemes. This rHSA(FeP-Glu) conjugate can bind and release O2 reversibly under physiological conditions (pH 7.3, 37℃) in the same manner as hemoglobin and myoglobin. The O2-adduct complex had a remarkably long lifetime (т1/2: 5 h). The O2-binding affinity [P1/2O2: 27 Torr] was identical to that of human red cells. Laser flash photolysis experiments gave the O2- and CO-association rate constants and suggested that there are two different geometries of the imidazole binding to the central ion.

Water-soluble low molecular weight chitosan of nanometer level and its copper complexes were prepared, and characterized by IR spectra, elemental analysis and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The modes and mechanism of these copper complexes interaction with DNA were studied by a fluorescent probe method and electrophoresis analysis. It is suggested that there are electrostatic and intercalation modes of copper complexes interacting with DNA. At first, the cationic complex electrostaticly binds to the negatively charged phosphate backbone of DNA, and then a portion of the complex intercalates between the base pairs on the DNA duplex strand. The Co-Na heterobinuclear polymer complex based on Salen Schiff base and crown ether have been prepared by a method of interfacial polymerization without the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. The catalytic behavior of the Co-Na heterobinuclear polymer complex in aerobic oxidation of cyclohexene has been studied.

Chitosan has been modified by polyacrylate sodium or acrylate sodium in the presence of glutar-aldehyde, which afforded four kinds of modified chitosan (CTS-PA) with different ratios of reacting substance. They are used as an environmentally benign polymer adsorbent. The adsorption properties of these CTS-PA to Pb2+ have been measured. The best adsorption to Pb2+ was CTS-PA4, the removal efficiency was higher in higher concentration solution than in a lower one, the value of the removal efficiency is approximate 99.991%.

The polymer-bound Schiff base ternary cobalt complexes (PS-SalPhe-Co-L) (L=Phen, Bipy and 8HQ)) have been prepared from the polymer bound Schiff base ligand, cobalt salt and the second ligand, such as 1,10-phenanthroline(phen), 2,2’-bipyridyl(bipy) and 8-quinolinol(8HQ). The polymer-bound Schiff base ternary cobalt complexes were characterized by the infrared spectra and ICP-AES. The catalytic activity of the complexes has been studied in aerobic epoxidation of long-chain linear aliphatic olefins. It showed that 1-octene or 1-decene can be directly oxidized by molecular oxygen catalyzed by PS-SalPhe-Co-L (L=Phen, Bipy and 8HQ), which afford the 1,2-epoxy alkane.

The polymer bound Schiff-base ligand (PS-SalGlu) has been prepared from polystyrene bund salicylaldehyde and glutamic acid, and its complex (PS-SalGlu-Co) has also been synthesized. The polymer ligand and its complex were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, small area X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectro (ICP-AFS). In the presence of the complex, cyclohexene can be effectively oxidized by molecular oxygen without reductant. The long-chain linear aliphatic olefins, such as 1-octene, 1-decene, 1-dodecene and 1-tetradecene, can be directly oxidized by molecular oxygen catalyzed by PS-SalGlu-Co, which affords the 1,2-epoxy alkane.

The new NaY zeolite(DMY), whose cages’ size had been expanded, was used as supports for encapsulating the large Schiff-base complexes. The catalysts were used in the aerobic epoxidation of 1-octene. The catalyst showed high activity and selectivity for the substrate and products. These catalysts proved to be more active than other kind of metal ion or supports. The effect of temperature, organic acid or base, and the amount of catalyst was discussed.
