A new metal-valence tuning synthetic approach has been utilized to generate two new mixed-valence Cu (I, II) coordination polymers Cu2 (im) 3 and Cu3 (im) 4 (Him=imidazole), which are an unprecedented uninodal 4-connected 4.85 topological net and a 4-connected (4, 4) net, respectively.

[M2L2] 2 structures by varying the d10 metal and/or the ligand (M=CuI or AgI, L=ophen or obpy; Hobpy=1H-[2, 2'] bipyridinyl-6-one), and have successfully obtained three dimers-of-dimers: [Ag2 (ophen) 2] 2·6H2O (2), [Cu2 (obpy) 2] 2 (3), and [Ag2 (obpy) 2] 2·4.5H2O·0.5DMF (4). X-ray analyses of these structures show that interdimer M-M separations in [Ag2-(ophen)2]2 (3.199Å) are remarkably shorter than those in [Cu2 (ophen) 2] 2 (3.595Å). Shorter interdimer M-M separations are found in the structures of [M2 (obpy) 2] 2 (2.986 and 2.993Å in [Cu2 (obpy) 2] 2, 3.037 to 3.093Å in [Ag2 (obpy) 2] 2), in which the p systems are smaller than in the complexes with the ophen ligand. Detailed structural comparison of these dimers-of-dimers indicates that the interdimer, face-toface π-π interactions repulse rather than support the interdimer metal-metal attractive interactions. This study also yields qualitative comparison of the strengths between argentophilic, cuprophilic, and face-to-face π-π interactions. DFT calculations on the four dimers-of-dimers further support the above deduction. The structure of a trimer-of-dimers [Ag2 (obpy) 2] 3 (Ag-Ag 3.171 to 3.274Å) is further evidence that the oligomerization of the [M2L2] molecules is favored by stronger metallophilic and weaker face-to-face π-π interactions.

A novel AgI complex [Ag (phen) (CN)]·(phen) (phen=1, 10-phenanthroline) has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The crystal packing reveals unprecedented threefold interpenetrating three-dimensional four-connected networks self-assembled through C-H…N hydrogen bonds and π…π stacking interactions, which are stabilized by strong C-H…π interactions between the three independent networks. The photoluminescent properties have been investigated by molecular orbital (MO) calculations, showing that the luminescent properties of the complex in the solid state are due to both a πL→πL·transition of the uncoordinated phen species and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), admixed with the cyanide-to-ligand charge transfer (XLCT) of the [Ag (phen) (CN)] species.

Solvothermal treatments of acetonitrile, aqueous ammonia and copper (II) salts frequently yielded α-[Cu(mtz)] (1) (Hmtz=3, 5-dimethyl-1, 2, 4-triazole) under different reaction conditions. However, two new supramolecular isomers of 1, namely β-[Cu(mtz)] (2) and γ-[Cu(mtz)] (3) were successfully isolated upon introducing 4, 4-bipyridine or nitrate as an additive. 1-3 represent the first example of true supramolecular isomerism within 3D 3-connected nets. Besides the 4.8.10 net for the tetragonal phase 1 (P42/n, a= 13.470 (2), c= 6.142 (2) Å), two novel 3-connected nets, 8210-a and 6.102, were observed in the new tetragonal phase 2 (I-42d, a= 14.0247(5), c= 5.2884(4) Å) and orthorhombic phase 3 (Iba2, a= 8.0423 (7), b=11.5310 (10), c=17.3505 (16) Å), respectively. The three isomers also displayed distinct physical properties related to their different supramolecular structures.

Networked coordination polymers are of great current interest for potential applications as materials and because of their intriguing variety of architectures and new topologies.[1-3] It was suggested that, among numerous topological nets, the most important and plausible targets for designed synthesis are those with "simple, high-symmetry" structures. [4] However, only a very limited number of types of simple three-dimensional (3D) 3-connected [2] and 4-connected nets based solely on square-planar nodes,such as the cubic NbO (6482), [3a,b] tetragonal CdSO4 (658), [3c] "dense net" (759), [3d] and 4.4.84.84.88.88[3e] nets have been reported so far, in contrast to the widely established 2D 3-connected honeycomb or brickwall (63) and 4-connected square grids (44). [1] Meanwhile, some 3-connected nets can be described as augmented 4-connected nets by substituting four adjacent 3-connected nodes for 4-connected nodes, [4, 5] for example, 4.8 2 for 44, 4.12 2 for NbO (6482), and 4.142 for diamond (66).
