In a recent paper by Garbacz and Grabski [1] different methods for modelling some characteristic distributions of grain boundaries in a random polycrystal have been compared. It was shown that these distributions obtained on the basis of grain orientation distributions were in good agreement with the theoretical results, whereas considerable discrepancies came from the analysis of randomly generated rotation (misorientation) matrices, particularly in the case of the CSL (Coincidence Site Lattice) grain boundary distribution. The authors have ascribed the discrepancies, which were previously reported by Warrington and Boon [2], to an improper use of the method. It is the intent of this comment to demonstrate a contrary conclusion.

The crystallographic textures developed in a zinc-copper-titanium (ZnCuTi) alloy sheet during asymmetric rolling have been studied. The strain history undergone by the sheet has been calculated by an elasto-plastic flow line model. The so obtained successive strain increments have been used as input data to a Taylor model, to simulate the corresponding texture evolution in the sheet. It is shown that the shear strain is the dominant factor that governs the texture evolution during asymmetric rolling.

The effects of electric field annealing on the development of recrystallization texture and microstructure in a coldrolled IF steel sheet were studied by means of ODF analysis and optical microscopy. Results showed that the applied external electric field might retard recrystallization, and enhance the c-fiber recrystallization texture that is beneficial to the deep-drawability.

By means of equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE), pure Cu single crystal samples were processed down to the submicron scale. In some parts of the samples, recrystallization occurs at room temperature. The recrystallization mechanism was analyzed by SEM-EBSP and SEM-ECC techniques. The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) and orientation distribution function (ODF) of the regions undergoing recrystallization were computed. The results show that the nuclei can be formed at the intersections of two different shear bands, and the microstructures and the grain boundary characters in these locations contribute to growth of recrystallized nuclei. The recrystallized grains had grown according to the Feltham’s mechanism.

The effects of magnetic field on nucleation barrier of the phase transformation from austenite to ferrite at different cooling rates in 42CrMo steel have been investigated. The microstructures of ferrite and pearlite aligned along the magnetic field direction (parallel to the hot-rolling direction) are obtained at a cooling rate of 10 1C/min, resulting from the kinetic effects of the applied magnetic field during cooling and the microstructural influences of an inhomogeneous deformation occurring during the previous hot rolling. In this case, the formation of ferrite grains at higher temperatures is attributed mainly to the preferential nucleation at austenite boundaries. However, a fairly uniform microstructure of randomly distributed ferrite and pearlite is formed at a high cooling rate of 46 1C/min in the magnetic field of 14 T, as a result of both intergranular and intragranular nucleation at relatively low temperatures. Probing into this issue is helpful to gain a better understanding of kinetic influences of magnetic field on the phase transformation from austenite to ferrite.

Harmonic expansion is a useful tool to analyze the CSL triple junction distribution in a randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregate. By using this approach, a general form of the CSL triple junction distribution could be derived. It makes it possible to calculate-in a very efficient way-the frequency of occurrence of various CSL triple junctions. The accuracy of calculation is confirmed by the estimated frequency for the 1-1-1 junctions, which turns out to be in very good agreement with its theoretical value as derived from fully analytical calculation.

The effects of electric field annealing on recovery and recrystallization in a cold-rolled 08Al killed steel sheet were investigated. Results show that, with the application of a DC electric field, the recovery and recrystallization processes are retarded and the recrystallization γ -fiber texture is strengthened. Those retardation effects are attributed to a decrease of the driving force for recrystallization caused by electric field, which would hinder grain nucleation and growth on the whole. Possible reason for the intensification of the recrystallization γ -fiber texture through electrical annealing is briefly discussed.
