【期刊论文】Interaction of longitudinal and transverse optic modes in silica glass

The splitting between longitudinal and transverse optical modes was observed in the infraredreflection spectra of silica glasses at different incident angles. The density of states and thefrequency of the longitudinal mode were found to increase with increasing incident angle. A sharpminimum in the reflectance was monitored at large incident angles. A transmission window wasobserved in the absorption spectra of silica glass plates. The sharp minimum in the reflectance andappearance of the transmission window are believed to be the results produced by the Doppler effectdue to the interaction of longitudinal and transverse optic modes in silica glass. The phase velocityof the longitudinal mode was evaluated in terms of the relativistic Doppler shift formula.

By considering an energy balance between the electric potential energy of the incident light and the Hamiltonian of theinduced oscillators in a non-absorbing isotropic medium, the Newton}Drude equation, the Sellmeier dispersion formula,and the wavelength-dependent mean polarizability were derived. The Newton}Drude formula and the Lorentz}Lorenzequation were used to calculate the density-dependent mean polarizability of the densi"ed silica glasses. The evaluatedmean polarizability was compared with the band shifts in the UV-and IR-spectra with the density of glasses, and thevalidity of the Newton}Drude formula was discussed.

The Faraday effect in glassy SiO2 (Suprasil W2) was monitored by a spectroscopic method. The Verdet constant wasevaluated in the visible wavelength region. The relationship between the determined Verdet constant and the refractiveindex of the silica glass can be described by the dispersion theory.

Piezoelectric effect has been monitored and applied usually below the microwave frequencies. By propagation of the laserbeam through a-quartz, diffraction fringes were observed in the transmitted beam spot. The diffraction fringes are produced bythe dynamic gratings induced by the electromagnetic field of the incident light, namely an optical piezoelectric effect in aquartz.q 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Successive optical interference fringes were monitored for a-quartz at the frequencies of the combination and overtones ofthe fundamental lattice vibration bands. The interference fringes were explained to be formed by the dynamic gratings inducedby coupling of the transverse waves of the incident light with the optic modes in a-quartz. The distance of the dynamic gratingswas evaluated to be 32.895mm.
