A universal fiber-optic high-resolution point sensor system, based upon singal recoversy by dual-wayelength low coherence interferometry, has been developed and demonstrated ofor quasistatic absolute measurements of multiparameters. This system is coapable of multiplexing up to 32 fiber-optic point sensors which can be fiber optic interfermoeters or fiber Bragg gratings or any combination of the two. The topology of this system isbased on a spatially multiplexd scheme with low coherence singal recovery that we have reported previously.A range of mutiparameter point sensors, including a medium pressure sneor, a high pressure sensor, a miniature temperature sensor, a displacemnt sensor, and a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor with drift-compensation, have been developd and incorporated into thsi netowrk and demonstrated. A range to resolution of better than 104:1 and 2

We report a novel technique in which by combining the output from two multimode laser diodes a synthesized source with an extremely short coherence length is produced for use in white-light interferometric sensingsystems. Experimentally and theoretically it is demonstrated that, by summing the autocorrelation function of two multimode laser diodes with a wavelength difference of 108nm, a synthesized source with an equivalentcoherence length of ~4μm is generated, greatly reducing the signal-to-noise ratio required to identify the centralfringe position.

A spatialywavelength-division multiplexing topology with combination of a tunable-wavelength filter and an interferometric wavelength scanner is used to interrogate a range of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors embedded in modern composite materials. A nine-element FBG sensor system based on this topology is demonstrated for quasi-static strain sensing of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic plate for aerospace applications. Preliminary experimental results show that a strain resolution of ~1.8μεrms with an ~30-Hz bandwidth (~0.32με√Hz) for quasi-static strain measurement has been achieved.

Simultaneous strain and temperature measurement for advanced 3-D braided composite materials using fibre-optic sensor technology is demonstrated, for the first time. These advanced 3-D braided composites can virtually eliminate the most serious problem of delamination for conventional composites. A tandem in-fibre Bragg-grating (FBG)/extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor (EFPI) system with improved accuracy has been used to facilitate simultaneous temperature and strain measurement in this work. The non-symmetric distortion of the optical spectrum of the FBG, due to the combination of the FBG and the EFPI, is observed for the first time. Experimental and theoretical studies indicate that this type of distortion can affect the measurement accuracy seriously and it is mainly caused by the modulation of the periodic output of the EFPI. A simple method has been demonstrated to improve the accuracy for detection of the wavelength-shift of the FBG induced by temperature change. A strain accuracy of ~±20με and a temperature accuracy of ~±1℃ have been achieved, which can meet the requirements for practical applications of 3-D braided composites.

A simultaneous spatial, time and wavelength division multiplexing topology, with combination of a tunable wavelength filter and an interferometric wavelength scanner, os proposed to interrogate a range of in-fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. An eleven-element FBG sensor network based upon this topology is demonstrated for quasi-static strain sensing. Preliminary experimental results show that a strain resolution of ~7μεwith a~30Hz bandwidth (~1.3με/√Hz) for quasi-static strain measurement has been obtained.

In-"bre Bragg grating (FBG) sensor technology has become one of the most rapidly progressing sensing topics of this decade in the "eld of optical "bre sensors. FBG sensors are currently emerging from the laboratory to "nd practical applications. Rapid progress has been made in both sensor system developments and applications in recent years. This article presents a systematic review of recent progress in applications of FBG sensors in large composite and concrete structures, the electrical power industry, medicine, and chemical sensing.

In this paper, we report novel long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) fabricated by using a new writing technique that is mainly based on the thermal shock effect of focused high-frequency CO2 laser pulses at several kHz. Several unique characteristics of these LPFGs, such as bend and transverse-load, etc., are observed by experiments, for the first time, to our knowledge. These unique features of the LPFGs are mainly due to the asymmetrical distribution of the refractive index on the cross-section of the LPFG induced by high-frequency CO2 laser pulses. Based on these novel LPFGs, an amplified spontaneous emission noise filter and a gain equalizer have been demonstrated for the noise figure reduction and the gain spectrum flattening of Er-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), respectively. By means of the unique bending and loading features of the LPFG, two tunable gain equalizers have been demonstrated for dynamic gain flattening of EDFAs.

In this paper, we report a novel long-period fiber grating (LPFG) fabricated by using a new writing technique that is mainly based on the thermal shock effect of focused high-frequency CO2 laser pulses at several kilohertz. A number of unique characteristics of such a LPFG, such as bend, torsion, and transverse load, are observed by experiments, for the first time, to our knowledge. Based on these unique features, a novel bend-insensitive LPFG sensor that could solve the problem of cross-sensitivity between bend and other measurands, a novel torsion sensor that can realize absolute measurement of twist rate, and a load sensor that can achieve simultaneous measurement of transverse load and temperature using a single LPFG element are proposed and demonstrated. These unique features of the LPFGs are mainly due to the asymmetrical distribution of the refractive index on the cross section of the LPFG induced by high-frequency CO2 laser pulses.

A novel method for multiplexing fiber-optic Fizeau strain sensors with optical amplification is proposed and demonstrated. This method overcomes the two intrinsic disadvantages of fiber-optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) strain sensors, i.e. weak signal and difficult multiplexing. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and optical amplification of an Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) pumped by a 980nm laser diode are used simultaneously to enhance the interferometric signal considerably. A Fizeau interferometer formed by two fiber ends with a quite different reflectivity is used to replace the F-P cavity in sensor head design. Such a Fizeau cavity can enlarge the cavity length by at least an order of magnitude and allows more than ten sensors to be multiplexed simultaneously by using spatial-frequency multiplexing. The operating principle of the sensor system is discussed and an experiment is carried out to verify the concept of the method proposed. It is anticipated that such a sensor system could find important applications for health onitoring of large structures.

【期刊论文】Dual-cavity interferometric wavelength-shift detection for in-fiber Bragg grating sensors

A dual-cavity interrogation method used to enhance the unambiguous measurement range of in-fiber Bragg grating sensors with high-resolution interferometric wavelength-shift detection is escribed. This novel technique is based on the use of two sets of fringes obtained with a stepped interferometric wavelength scanner with dual cavity lengths. We demonstrate the concept by interrogating an in-fiber grating temperature sensor with a stepped Michelson wavelength scanner.
