曹庄琪,男,1945年6月出生。1968年12月毕业于哈尔滨军事工程学院工程物理系。1970年至1979年在西南物理研究所任研究实习员。1979年至1982年在上海交通大学物理系攻读硕士研究生,毕业后留校任教。1990年获英国皇家学会资助赴格拉斯哥大学电子工程系进修,1992年回国。同年晋升为物理系教授。1996年遴选为博士生导师。2001年获国务院特殊津贴。主要研究领域为导波光学和光波导器件。已出版专著《光波导技术物理基础》和《导波光学中的转移矩阵方法》。在国内外学术刊物发表论文100多篇,拥有公开和授权专利20余项,完成和在研国家级、省市级科研项目10余项。

We present research on nonether polyphenylquinoxaline film waveguides, and a scheme for an all-opticalswitching operation of waveguides is suggested. We use the m-line spectroscopy technique to characterize theguiding modes in the waveguide, and the switching phenomenon is observed with two-wavelength nonlinearprism coupling. The measured response time of the switching signal is less than 10 -9s.

We report theory and experiment on ultrahigh-order modes in a symmetrical metal-cladding thickoptical waveguide. The waveguide consists of a LiNbO3 slab or a glass slab with a thickness greaterthan 0.1mm, two gold films deposited on the upper and bottom sides of the slab serving as thecladding of the waveguide. By using the free-space coupling technique, ultrahigh-order modes m 2000 are excited, and its high sensitivity to both refractive index and thickness of the guide,as well as the polarization independence are demonstrated.

An oscillating wave sensor based on Fabry-Perot resonance modes has been developed. Different fromthe surface plasmon resonance sensors and the waveguide mode sensors in which the sample is locatedin the evanescent field region, the proposed device contains the sample in the core region that supportsthe oscillating field. Owing to the strong concentration of the electromagnetic field in the sensingmedium, the proposed device exhibits unusual sensitivity enhancement, which has never been exploitedin any other devices.

A new technique for measuring the electro-optic coefficient of nonlinear optical polymer is described. In anattenuated-total-reflection experiment the refractive index of the poled polymer is changed because of thePockels effect. This change causes a shift of the angular position of the surface plasmon modes that correspondsto a change in reflectivity at a fixed angle. By measuring the change of the light reflectivity at theproperly chosen angle one can calculate the electro-optic coefficient of the poled polymer. Compared withother, conventional methods, here the electro-optic coefficients are given in a simpler form and the requiredparameters are easier to measure. The commonly used lock-in amplifier is not required. This technique is ahighly sensitive method for measuring the electro-optic coefficient because of the newly chosen working interiorangle for which a tiny change in the refractive index leads to a large change in reflectivity.

We present a novel matrix approach to proving that the phase shift at a turning point in a planar optical waveguideis exactly equal to π rather than to π/2 or to some other value. We also show the existence of phasecontributions from reflected subwaves, which to our knowledge have never been taken into account previously.

On the basis of the transfer-matrix technique, the concept of the equivalent attenuated vector is proposed andused to analyze the characteristics of the propagating modes in planar optical waveguides with gradedrefractive-index profile; an exact analytic equation is obtained for the dispersion equation of arbitrary gradedrefractive-index planar optical waveguides.

A simple displacement measurement based on the attenuated total reflection technique is proposedand experimentally demonstrated. By analyzing the fringe shift of the reflective pattern recorded on a CCD camera, a slight displacement, which corresponds to a change in the waveguide thickness, can be determined in real time with adequate accuracy. The measurement range of this method isabout 240um, and its accuracy can reach 0.05um.

We report on a coupling method, which transfers energy of a light beam from free space into asymmetrical metal-cladding optical waveguide from the top surface without employing the prism,grating, tapered film, and other coupling components. In the experiment, a glass flat with a thicknessabout 100um, sandwiched between two gold films is used as a guiding layer. A top gold film of 46nm thick serves as a coupling layer as well as the cladding and a base gold film of 200nm servesas the substrate of the waveguide. Up to 50% of the incident light energy fed into the waveguide hasbeen demonstrated.

Based on improved attenuated-total-reflection technique,the electrically induced complex refractive index change ofelectrooptic polymer film was measured by employing the data obtainedfrom different guided wave resonance dip.
