赫晓东教授一直从事复合材料的研究工作,尤其在C/C复合材料超高温性能研究方面成就卓著。他采用细观力学的理论和方法,建立了细编穿刺C/C复合材料的细观分析理论模型,在国内首次完成了该材料的性能预报。1994年又开始了高温燃烧合成技术的研究并取得了丰硕成果,先后研制出了高导热率陶瓷材料、高硬度金属陶瓷、高品质氮化物陶瓷粉末和电磁波吸收材料,仅在2000年就获得五项国家专利。2001年10月开始承担863课题,主持跨大气层飞行机体结构和火箭发动机复合材料燃料储箱的研究工作,采用特种纤维缠绕金属内衬技术及特殊端部加强技术,所研制的大型火箭发动机复合材料燃料储箱和轻质量高压气瓶已经通过有关专家评审,预计将在04年底定型生产用于某型号发动机燃料输送系统。2002年起正式承担国家863航空航天领域的相关课题,主持高马赫数跨大气层演示样机热防护系统的方案研究与优化,热防护材料的开发与制备。赫晓东教授近年来在国内外杂志上共发表高水平学术论文150余篇,其中SCI收录33篇,EI收录41篇。目前,他已经培养博士研究生18名,硕士研究生10名。还培养形成了3名骨干教授、3名助教授、1名博士后、2名助教的青年人才梯队。

Tiffs paper briefly introduces the preparation technology of micro-layer composite material by the Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EBPVD) tecinique. Taking the advantage of the large-scale commercial software of Finite Element Analysis, a reasonable physical model was built up during the deposition processing and the distribution of residuul stress was analyzed between substrate and deposition layer or among deposition layers. The results show that: with the increasing substrate preheating temperature, the interlaminar shear stress increases but the axial residuul stress decreases. And the probability of curling up after de-bonding tends to enhance as the thickness of deposition fihn increases.

Microlaminates with alternating layers of Ni and Ni3A1 were fabricated by using EB-PVD method. The influences of deposition rates and substrate temperature on morphology of the microlaminates were investigated. The results showed that in order to produce Ni/Ni3A1 microlaminate with lower porosity and prevent the formation of columnar grains, higher deposition rates and substrate temperature were required. The mechanical properties of the microlaminates were examined using tensile tests. The fracture behavior was temperature and interlamellar spacing dependent, with a lower tensile strength at higher temperature or with larger ingerlamellar spacing.

The influence of the oxygen pressure on the phase composition, microstructural evolution of the combustion products during the combustion synthesis of zinc ferrite through iron, iron oxide, and zinc oxide powders was discussed. The results show that with the increase of oxygen pressure, combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity increase. Single spinel-phase zinc ferrite can be obtained when the oxygen pressure is 1.0MPa and a non-stoichiometric composition, Fe1-xO or Fe1-zO is formed when the oxygen pressure is below 1.0MPa or above 1.5MPa. Moreover, an analysis of the dependence of the degree of conversion to ferrite, η, on the oxygen pressure has also been made. For a given porosity and combustion temperature, the degree of conversion increases with the oxygen pressure increasing and for any given porosity and degree of conversion, higher pressure is required at higher temperature.

Simultaneous combustion synthesis reaction and compaction of Ti, C, and Ni powders under a hydrostatic pressure was carried out to fabricate dense TiC-Ni functionally graded materials (FGMs) in a single processing operation. Scanning-electron microscope (SEM) and microprobe analysis (EPMA) was employed to investigate the microstructure and composition distribution. Experimental results demonstrate that Ni and Ti composition varies continuously and gradually along the thickness of the reacted sample, remarkably different from stepwise type prior to combustion synthesis. The constituents are continuous in microstructure everywhere and no distinct interaction occurs in TiC-Ni FGM. Moreover, the thermal physical and mechanical properties were measured as a function of composition. It was found that the properties of the FGMs were dependent on Ni content. The residual thermal stress of TiC-Ni FGM and dual-laminate non-FGM cooled to room temperature after combustion synthesis has been analyzed by finite element method. TiC-Ni FGM shows distortion and thermal stress relaxation, which is in striking contrast to the layered TiC-Ni non-FGM.

Large-scale TiC-xNi cermets with 240-mm diameter were fabricated by self-Propagating high-temperature synthesis and combined with pseudo heat isostatic pressing. Combustion-synthesized products consisted of TiC phase and Ni binder phase. Spheroidal TiC particles were enveloped by nearly continuous Ni binder phases. Size of TiC particles decrease with Ni content increase. Synthesized products have excellent mechanical properties and the bending strength of TiC-20Ni and TiC-30Ni is close to K151A and K152B, respectively, produced by traditional powder metallurgy technology.

Al2O3 and SiC green tapes with 0.2mm thickness used for LOM (laminated object manufacturing ) were prepared from a 75 wt.% ceramic suspension in a LDPE based organic vehicle followed by extrusion. Rheological characterization of the alumina and SiC suspensions were studied. TG-DTA analysis was carried out in air and microstructures were examined by SEM.

In situ SEM observations[1]have revealed that fatigue crack propagation is caused by the shear band decohesion around thecrack tip and the formation and cracking of the shear band is mainly caused by the plasticity generated in the loading part of aload cycle. Based on the crack tip plasticity a theoretical analysis has been performed and a model has been set up to consider theeffect of the applied stress ratio on fatigue threshold. The obtained results have been compared with a wide range of published testdata and good agreement has been achieved. This method is very easy to use and no fatigue crack closure measurement is needed,therefore this model is significant in engineering application.

This paper briefly introduces the characteristics of Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EBPVD) technique and the whole process of preparing micro-layer composite laminate. And several major influencing factors are presented and discussed. It was found that residual gas pressure should be low enough to guarantee the unobstructed transportation of vapor steam and electron beam; the evaporation method and speed are up to the vapor pressure deficit of different compositions of raw materials; and the substrate temperature could have great influence on the microstructure of the micro-layer laminates.
