【期刊论文】Silver Nanoparticles Capped by Long-Chain Unsaturated Carboxylates

We study the preparation and capping of silver nanoparticles by several unsaturated long-chain carboxylates. UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy are used to characterize the effect of the chain length, its configuration, and the degree of unsaturation on the size distribution of the nanoparticles. Langmuir layers and Langmuir-Blodgett films are used to study the adsorption of these carboxylates on the particles. We find that unsaturated carboxylates in the cis configuration are useful stabilizers for the control of particle size and its surface properties.

Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a newly synthesized side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer (PSLC) and its blend with arachidic acid (AA) have been investigated by means of surface pressure-area isotherms, hysteresis curves, X-ray diffraction, and polarized IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies. The results show that AA matrices can enhance monolayer stability and improve the packing of side chains in the film. At high surface pressure, the mixed monolayer undergoes a phase transition from an ordered liquid condensed to a solidlike phase, corresponding to the formation of aggregates or crystallites. Two types LB films (Y and X) can be obtained on the hydrophobic substrates under the condition of different deposition pressures and AA's proportion. A detailed analysis of the IR dichroism suggests that the axis of the all-trans hydrocarbon chains of AA or spacers in the side chain is less tilted to the surface normal for larger AA's proportion and the axis of the aromatic Schiff base chromophore is nearly perpendicular to the substrate plane. The hypsoshift of UV-Vis absorption in the film compared with the spectrum in solution indicates that H aggregates form between the chromophore.

Monolayer behaviors for a series of newly synthesized photochromic liquid crystaline copolymcrs were studied. Results showed that azo-homopolymcr would aggregatc heavily after spreading and its monolyer was not suitable for deposition of the reversible photochromic LB film. However, the liquid crystallinity, which resulted by intorducing mesogcnic cholesteric sidc chains, could reduce monolaycr aggregation and improve reversible photoinduced structural change in LB films.

The monolayer behavior of three newly synthesized side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes and corresponding monomers have been investigated at the air/water interface. The surface pressure-area isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) were used to study the influence by different mesogenic units in the side chains. The results indicate that difference in mesogenic unit structure, such as linkage bond and mesogen length, have marked effects on the liquid crystallinity and self-aggregation tendency of the molecular chains which determine the properties of the monolayers.

We study the in situ fabrication of copper sulfide nanoparticles within a three-dimensional (3D) organic-layered solid crystal of alkylammonium-metal complexes by their reaction with H2S gas. UV-vis spectroscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy are used to monitor the formation of the nanoparticles and to characterize them. The overall two-dimensionallayered structure of the alkylammonium is preserved during the reaction as seen by FTIR, though deformations near the particles are expected. The reaction kinetics for different chain lengths and metal ions (Cu, Mn, and Cd) have been measured and discussed in terms of the rigidity of the layered 3D structures.

Lamellar platinum nanostructures are electrodeposited from lyotropic liquid crystals. The templates and deposits are characterized with small angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy respectively. Effects of deposition conditions, composition of the template and electrolyte concentration on the morphology of the products are investigated.

A new and simple method is used to control formation of gold nanoparticles in lyotropic liquid crystal. Triangular or hexagonal nano-and micro-plates can be obtained in PEO-PPO-PEO-based hexagonal liquid crystals after adding a small amount of cationic surfactant, CTAB. All plates are single crystals and mostly characterized by orientation along the [111] direction. Their sizes are even longer than 10mm. The selective adsorption of CTAB on certain crystallographic facets is the main point of supposed mechanism.

The monolayer behaviors at the ir/water interface of a newly synthesized side chain liquid crystalline polymer (PLC-4) and its constituent monomer (MLC-4) have been investigated by means of surface pressure-area isotherms, hysteresis curves, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The orientation and packing of molecules in the monolayer with compression are discussed. The ability to form Langmuir-Blodgett films was investigated.

Positively charged silver nanoparticles capped by cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) are prepared in aqueous solution. The structure of capping agents on Ag particles is systematically characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), di.erential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). It suggests that CTAB molecules form a bilayer shell on Ag surface with a 1:5 rough ratio of inner/outer molecules.
