The following basins in tile nortthern area of China are selected as tile case study areas: tile Yellow River, tile Haihe River, tile Liaolle River, and tile Songllnajiang River. Qualitative and qnantitative analyses of tile impact of llnlnan activity on river mnoff in different spatio temporal scales, including daily, lnontllly, annual, inter decade, inter century variations, according to long teml observation data, are carlied ont. The diiving forces of almnal rnllOff change in those livers are also analyzedi it Call be seen froln observed data tllat tile qnantity of downstrealn flow in tile nortllem part of China depends on precipitation over a catchillent and withdrawal frolll tlle upstrealll. River rnllOff has a tendency towards decrease in terlllS of a natllral basin as well as in temls of all administrative region. Besides tile climatic changes, tile increase in tile alllOllllt of water taken frolll liver conrse is tile direct canse wily observed mnoff decreases in tile nortllenl part of China. Tile freqnency, at which lninor daily discharge appears, increases rapidly. Amlual lnean mnoff generated from tile salne order of precipitation in 1980s and 1990s decreases by 20 50% as compared in 1950s and 1960s. Tile ilnpact of himlan activity on river discharge is lnore in arid or semi arid areas tllan in himlid areas.
