本文着重研究城市的形态。不同的历史时期、不同的生产方式和不同的生产力水平会产生不同城市形态。城市形态总是受到自然、社会的、政治的，经济的影响和制约。研究城市形态中以使规划者自觉地掌握城市形态变化的规律，提出合理的规划方案，并利用其规律进地引导和控制。影响城市形态的因素是多种多样的，如经济地理、城市建设方针、经济投资、城市的现状、自然环境、城市交通等。这些因素是综合地起作用的。自然力和人为的力，自然界规划，变错地对城市形态起作用。它们常表现为线形的，由内向外，磁性相吸，以及内部调节的特点。规划工作都要注意城市各要素之间平衡与不平衡的关系。最后作者提出了研究城市形态的方法 。

本文从理论和实践的结合上论述建筑创作的社会构成。建筑创作是社会实践活动的全过程，要反映时空结构上的关差异，它是建筑文化的相互交汇、渗透和延续的表现。建筑创作也是社会约定俗成的突破，是参与性智慧的集约。建筑师的创作要有环境的感应，同时，建筑创作阳是一种形态构成的研究。

对城市途径有关各要素作了综合的叙述，并且指出研究的手段——自人口的聚集至城镇形成发展这一历史的纵剖面及地域、产业结构等横向有关要素作整体系统的分析与比较，并指出应重点研究人口指标分析、产业可比关系、城市化和城市化设施，以及城市体系的研究问题。

将杨延宝先生的建筑学术思想总结为5条：1. 实践是建筑设行的工基本，是建筑教育的重要环节。2. 国情出发，依据当时当地的社会、经济、技术状况做出合理设计。3. 在中西文化的交流中探索筑文化的传承、转换和创新。4. 将建筑看成是社会人的建筑，辨证地对待建筑的变化。了解实施过程又注重结果。5. 尊重自然环境与建筑、城市的融合，尊重建筑历史、技科的发展，不断提高建筑文化境界。
