【期刊论文】NON-LINEAR DYNAMICS OF A SUSPENDED TRAVELLING CABLE SUBJECT TO TRANSVERSE FLUID EXCITATION
胡海岩, H. Y. HU AND D. P. JIN
Journal of Sound and Vibration (2001) 239 (3), 515-529,-0001,():

Starting with the analysis of the fluid drag and lift on a suspended travelling cable subjected to transverse fluid excitation, the paper presents the expression of forces on the cable, and then a set of partial differential equations of in-plane and out-of-plane motions of the cable. In the case of small ratio of sag to span, the in-plane and out-of-plane modes of the first order dominate the motions of cable. Thus, the partial differential equations of cable are reduced to two ordinary differential equations of the second order by means of the Galerkin approach. Because the stiffness terms disappear in the ordinary differential equations when the cable is at equilibrium position, the co-ordinate transform proposed by Pilipchuk is used to describe the stretch and rotation of mid-span section of cable from the equilibrium position so that the transformed differential equations include linear stiffness terms. Afterwards, the differential equations are simplified by using the perturbation approach of two variables under the assumption that the Young's module of cable is not very small. As a result, the approximate cable dynamics yields a two-dimensional autonomous system and does not exhibit any chaotic motions. According to the approximated model, two equilibrium positions of cable are determined and their stability is analyzed. Finally, the influences of travelling velocity and cable density on the cable dynamics are discussed on the basis of numerical computations. The case studies show that the travelling velocity should be limited when a very light cable is laid under water in order to avoid harmful and dangerous swings.

【期刊论文】STABILITY SWITCHES OF TIME-DELAYED DYNAMIC SYSTEMS WITH UNKNOWN PARAMETERS
胡海岩, Z. H. WANG AND H. Y. HU
Journal of Sound and Vibration (2000) 233 (2), 215-233,-0001,():

The paper presents a systematic method of stability analysis for high-dimensional dynamic systems involving a time delay and some unknown parameters. Here, the term "unknown" means that the parameters are constants but yet to be determined. The analysis focuses on the stability switches of those systems with increase of the time delay from zero to infinity. On the basis of the generalized Sturm criterion, the parameter space of concern is divided into several regions determined by a discrimination sequence and the Routh-Hurwitz conditions. It is found, as the time delay increases, that the system may undergo no stability switch, exactly one stability switch, or more than one stability switches when the parameters are chosen from different regions. To demonstrate the approach, a detailed analysis of the stability switches is made in the paper for an active vehicle suspension equipped with a delayed "sky-hook" damper and a four-wheel steering vehicle with time delay in driver's response, respectively.

【期刊论文】DELAY-INDEPENDENT STABILITY OF RETARDED DYNAMIC SYSTEMS OF MULTIPLE DEGREES OF FREEDOM
胡海岩, Z. H. WANG, H. Y. HU
Journal of Sound and Vibration (1999) 226 (1), 57-81,-0001,():
-1年11月30日
On the basis of generalized Sturm theory, this paper presents a simple, but systematic approach to the delay-independent stability analysis of the linear dynamic systems involving multiple degrees of freedom and possibly two time delays. The approach enables one to complete the stability analysis in a much simpler way than before through the use of a MAPLE routine given in the paper. To demonstrate the approach, the paper gives a detailed analysis, the corresponding sufficient and necessary conditions as well as stable regions in parameter space of concern for the delay-independent stability of a vibrating system with time delays in state feedback, an active-tendon for a tall structure and an active suspension of a quarter car model.

【期刊论文】ICE-INDUCED NON-LINEAR VIBRATION OF AN OFFSHORE PLATFORM
胡海岩, D. P. JIN, H. Y. HU
Journal of Sound and Vibration (1998) 214 (3), 431-442,-0001,():

The non-linear behavior of ice-induced vibration of an offshore platform with four legs is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion of the system are derived by using the Hamiltonian Principle The force of moving ice based on the self-excitation and locking is used to model the phenomenon of contact between the ice and the platform. By using the approach of multiple scales, the primary resonance of the ice-induced vibration of the platform is analyzed. The numerical results show that there exist several kinds of combination resonances, including self-excited vibration and locking vibration. These results coincide with those observed from an offshore platform in the North China Sea, and hence enable one to gain insight into the ice-induced vibration of offshore platforms.

【期刊论文】STABILITY ESTIMATION OF HIGH DIMENSIONAL VIBRATING SYSTEMS UNDER STATE DELAY FEEDBACK CONTROL
胡海岩, H. Y. HU, E. H. DOWELL, AND L. N. VIRGIN
Journal of Sound and Vibration (1998) 214 (3), 497-511,-0001,():

The paper presents a method of assessing the stability of high dimensional vibrating systems under state feedback control with a short time delay. It is first proved that if the time delay is sufficiently short, an n-degree-of-freedom system with feedback delay maintains 2n eigenvalues near those of the corresponding system without feedback delay. A perturbation approach is then proposed to determine the first order variation of an arbitrary eigenvalue and corresponding eigenvector of the system with feedback delay by solving a set of linear algebraic equations only. The computation in this approach can be simplified to a matrix multiplication provided that the product of the time delay and the modulus of the eigenvalue is much less than 1. Furthermore, the approach is directly related to the Newton-Raphson iteration in the continuation of eigenvalues for long time delay. The efficacy of the approach is demonstrated via a number of case studies on two feedback delay systems of two degrees of freedom and ten degrees of freedom respectively.

【期刊论文】STABILITY ANALYSIS OF DAMPED SDOF SYSTEMS WITH TWO TIME DELAYS IN STATE FEEDBACK
胡海岩, H. Y. HU, AND Z. H. WANG
Journal of Sound and Vibration (1998) 214 (2), 213-225,-0001,():

This paper presents the stability analysis of linear, damped SDOF vibration control systems with two time delays, one in the displacement feedback and the other in the velocity feedback. First, a sufficient and necessary algebraic criterion is proved to check the system stability independent of time delays. According to this criterion, all possible combinations of the feedback gains that guarantee the delay-independent stability are given. Then, the effect of the feedback gains on the system stability is discussed when the time delays are finite. The most dangerous case is found when the time delay in the displacement feedback is much longer than that in the velocity feedback.

The primary resonance and the stability of a harmonically forced oscillator with a pair of symmetric set-up elastic stops are studied by means of the average approach. It is found that the set-up elastic stops greatly increase the complexities of the primary resonance as follows. Four kinds of persistent primary resonance and three critical cases exist. The motion of many of the persistent resonances becomes unstable when it begins to touch the set-up elastic stops with decrease of the excitation frequency. Moreover, there coexist three stable periodic motions and two unstable periodic motions at certain combinations of system parameters.

【期刊论文】AN ADAPTIVE CONTROL SCHEME FOR RECOVERING PERIODIC MOTION OF CHAOTIC SYSTEMS
胡海岩, H. Y. HU
Journal of Sound and Vibration (1997) 199 (2), 269-274,-0001,():
-1年11月30日
The paper presents an adaptive control scheme for recovering the original dynamics of a nonlinear system after a sudden disturbance in a system parameter by controlling the system parameter through linear feedback. The key problem is to choose the control stiffness in the feedback by assigning the poles of the linearized controlled system in an extended state space, which consists of the system state and the system parameter. The paper gives the simulations of recovering the fixed point of the logistic map and the periodic orbit of a harmonically forced Duffing oscillator from the chaos due to a large disturbance in the parameter. The simulations demonstrate well the efficacy and the advantages of the proposed adaptive control scheme.

A critical phenomenon in a continuous, piecewise-linear oscillator subjected to periodic excitation is considered, in which a periodic orbit happens to graze a switching plane between two linear regions of the oscillator at zero velocity. The analysis shows that if the piecewise linearity of the oscillator changes dramatically on the switching plane, the phenomenon turns the stability trend of the periodic orbit so abruptly that it may be hard to predict an incident bifurcation, although it is of a local type, according to the concepts of smooth dynamical systems. To detect the critical phenomenon induced by the non-smooth nature of the oscillator, a numerical scheme of searching for all periodic grazing orbits is presented, as well as a test function for grazing phenomena in tracing a branch of a periodic orbit. There follows a numerical simulation based on the scheme and the test function, which reveals an abundance of grazing phenomena and incident bifurcations of the oscillator.

The vector field of a continuously piecewise-linear oscillator under periodic excitation is by nature nonsmooth. However, the nonsmoothness in studying the oscillator dynamics has drawn little attention. The paper presents the nonsmoothness effect on the differentiability of the Poincar
