Crosslinked sodium polyacrylate was prepared by solution polymerization with N,N-methylene-bisacrylamide (bisAM) as crosslinking agent; it was subsequently surface-crosslinked by ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) and then was modified with inorganic salt to obtain a superabsorbent with water absorbency in 0.9 wt % NaCl aqueous solution at atmosphere and applied pressure (P≈2×103Pa) of 55 and 20 g.g-1, respectively. Moreover, it also had excellent hydrogel strength. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, neutralization degree (ND) of acrylic acid, amount of initiator, crosslinking agent, and surface-crosslinking agent, mass ratio of inorganic salt to initial superabsorbent, molar ratio of sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) to potassium dihydrogen hyphosphate (KH2PO4) on water absorbency (WA) in 0.9wt % NaCl aqueous, and the hydrogel modulus were investigated and optimized.

A series of pH-and temperature-responsive (N,N-diethylacrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) (DEAM-MAA) random copolymers were synthesized by free-radical copolymerization techniques, and their lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) at different pH values and their critical phase-transition pH values at different temperatures were determined by transmittance measurements, respectively. The LCSTs of DEAM-MAA copolymers depend on the MAA content in the copolymers and are significantly affected by the pH of the aqueous solution. Similarly, the critical phase-transition pH values also depend on the MAA content of the DEAM-MAA copolymers and are significantly affected by the temperature of the aqueous solution. The LCST of DEAM-MAA copolymers increases with an increase in the MAA content. The critical phase-transition pH increases with increasing MAA content in the copolymer and also increases with increasing aqueous solution temperature.

An investigation of influence of cryogenic treatment on extremely dilute aqueous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was performed by viscometry. The solution was frozen in liquid nitrogen or in a freezer at-25℃, then thawed at ambient temperature and concentrated by evacuation. The viscosity of the solution was measured using the dilute method. The experimental results indicated that the viscosity of the solution is related to N, the times of the freezing and thawing cycle, and the temperature for freezing. Undergoing a treatment of freezing and thawing, the viscosity of the solution is decreased, while it can be recovered the value of before the treatment as the solution had been heated at a high temperature. Thus, a conclusion may be obtained; that is, for an extremely dilute aqueous solution of PVA, which concentration is below Cgel, threshold concentration for gelation, an intramolecular hydrogen bonding cohesional entanglement can be formed by freezing as N>5. However, in the case of N<5, it not only formed an intramolecular hydrogen bonding but also produced an intermolecular hydrogen bonding. At the same time, the abnormal behavior of reduced viscosity of the solution in extremely dilute concentration region has been explained.
