【期刊论文】Visual Evaluation at Scale of Threshold to Suprathreshold Color Difference†

Visual evaluation experiments of color discrimination threshold and suprathreshold color-difference comparison were carried out using CRT colors based on the psychophysical methods of interleaved staircase and constant stimuli, respectively. A large set of experimental data was generated ranged from threshold to large suprathreshold color difference at the five CIE color centers. The visual data were analyzed in detail for every observer at each visual scale to show the effect of color-difference magnitude on the observer precision. The chromaticity ellipses from this study were compared with four previous published data, of CRT colors by Cui and Luo, and of surface colors by RIT-DuPont, Cheung and Rigg, and Guan and Luo, to report the reproducibility of this kind of experiment using CRT colors and the variations between CRT and surface data, respectively. The present threshold data were also compared against the different suprathreshold data to show the effect of color-difference scales. The visual results were further used to test the three advance color-difference formulae, CMC, CIE94, and CIEDE2000, together with the basic CIELAB equation. In their original forms or with optimized KL values, the CIEDE2000 outperformed others, followed by CMC, and with the CIELAB and CIE94 the poorest for predicting the combined dataset of all color centers in the present study.

A technical approach and system scheme for fast high-precision spectral measurement of color appearance are proposed This system is equipped with the modern self-scanning photodiode array devices (SPD) as the photo-electric, the pulsed xenon lamp as the light source, and with tile dual light paths and multichannel configuration. The related function modules of the instrument are designed. As the result of such a photo-electric arrangement, the measurement accuracy is improved a lot and the repeatability is also very satisfactory.

Three advanced CIELAB-based color-difference formulae, CMC, CIE94, and CIEDE2000, together with the basic CIELAB equation, were tested using large color-difference visual data (maximum average size was 12 CIELAB AE units) produced in this study. The color-difference comparison experiment was carried out at CIE Gray and Blue centers by a panel of 6 normal color-vision observers using CRT-generated stimuli based on the psychophysical method of constant stimuli. The experimental data, processed via probit analysis, were well fitted to chromaticity ellipses with a high reliance according to the observer accuracy in terms of PF/3 measure. A detailed comparison was performed to analyze the agreement between predicted color differences from all formulae and their corresponding visual scales in all measurement planes of CIELAB space. The results show that the CIEDE2000 marginally outperformed the others at all color centers while CIE94 was the worst in original formulae or with optimized kL value, but the CIELAB performed worst when the parametric factors of kL, kc, and kH were all optimized, with the CMC always lying between these extremes.

Based on the psychophysical method of constant stimuli, an experiment was carried out, using CRT-generated stimuli and in CIELAB color space, to test the visual color differences in relation to colorimetric scales. The CIE Gray and Blue color centers, the most basic color and, perceptually, the most different color, respectively, were chosen, and the maximum average size of test color difference was 12 CIELAB ΔE units. The resultant visual data, processed via probit analysis, were used to analyze the relationship between color discrimination threshold and suprathreshold color-difference perception. The equal color-difference contours, corresponding to all the visual scales, 4.0, 8.0, and 12.0 CIELAB ΔE units, were well fitted into ellipses while maintaining the orientation of the threshold one, but the shapes were not completely same, especially, at Blue center. The comparisons between visual color differences and their colorimetric counterparts, in CIELAB ΔE units or threshold units, show linear relations at both color centers, but the slopes were, in general, not equal to 45o and differed for all directions. Thus the suprathreshold color differences can be derived by enlarging the thresholds linearly but not uniformly, i.e. with different ratios for individual directions.
