The electro-optic effect of periodically poled optical superlattice LiNbO3 (PPLN) was studied. Because of the periodic electro-optic (EO) coefficient, the reciprocal vector of the periodic structure can be used to compensate for the phase mismatch between the ordinary and extraordinary waves, which is similar to the nonlinear optical frequency conversion process. If the quasi-phase-matching condition is satisfied, polarization of a light propagated in PPLN can rotate linearly with the applied electric field, which shows that PPLN may be used as a precise spectral filter or an EO switch.

Dual-frequency addressed hybrid-aligned nematic (HAN) liquid crystal cell is demonstrated as a variable optical attenuator at 1.55 mm wavelength. By controlling the low- and high-frequency electric field, the dual-frequency liquid crystal (DFLC) molecules can be reoriented parallel or perpendicular to the substrates so that the maximum obtainable phase modulation is doubled. In comparison to a homogeneous cell, the DFLC HAN cell shows a lower operating voltage and faster response time. Furthermore, the DFLC HAN cell exhibits three stable states that have some applications such as ternary photonic devices. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.

We propose a liquid crystal (LC)-based cost-effective Fourier optical spectrum analyzer (FOSA) without moving parts. Unlike normal spectrometers, the LC FOSA retrieves the spectrum’s Fourier coefficients instead of the direct spectrum measurement by changing differentLCstates in a number of stages. Besides the common applications, the LC FOSA can precisely read and recover the envelope of a dense wavelength-division-multiplexing spectrum to act as a spectral monitor and then work with a gainflattening device to control the optical network instantly and dynamically.

We studied the propagation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave in a piezoelectric superlattice. Because of the piezoelectric effect, a transverse polarization can be induced by a longitudinal wave which couples strongly to the EMwave in some particular frequency regions, resulting in the creation of a new type of polariton that does not exist in ionic crystals. The forbidden band associated with the polariton is not due to the Bragg reflection, but rather to the coupling.

We propose a new approach for generating coherent microwaves in a nonlinear photonic crystal through optical rectification. In a photonic crystal, the reciprocal vector and dispersion of the group velocity can be used to both compensate for the velocity mismatch between the generated microwave and the pump light. We show that coherent microwave radiation from kilohertz to terahertz can be generated through this approach by designing a suitable structure.
