The deposition of Fe on the Ru(10 (1) over bar 0) surface has been studied by low-energy electron diffraction angle-resolved UPS and Anger Electron-Spectroscopy. Upon annealing, Fe overlayers on Ru(10 (1) over bar 0) formed (1x1) and P(2x1) structures. For Fe coverages more than 10 ML, incommensurate layer of Fe with a fcc(111) face epitaxial structure is formed. For Fe overlayer at low coverages,the valence bands near Fermi level are similar to the clear surface,while for Fe overlayer at high coverages with the fcc(111) epitaxial structure,different energy band structures related to this epitaxial layer were observed.

There are two molecular adsorption states of CO in the CO + Cs/Ru(<10(1)over bar 0>) system. One is alpha(1)-CO, with lower C-O frequency, and the other is alpha(2)CO, with higher C-O frequency. The latter is similar to that on a clean Ru(<10(1)over bar 0>) surface. The two states of CO are occupied sequentially during the exposure to CO. The C-O stretch frequency of both states shifts to a higher value with the exposure to CO and to a lower value with higher Cs precoverage. The electronic structure of the alpha(1)-CO molecule is different from that of the alpha(2)-CO molecule and is of the same character as CO in a tilted mode.

The molecular orbitals of CO are rearranged under the strong influence of coadsorbed Cs atoms. The peak for CO on the clean Ru(10(1)over-bar-0) surface, at 7.5 eV BE attributed to the 5 sigma and Ix orbits, is split into two peaks; one is at 6.3 eV BE and the other 7.8 eV BE. The peak at 6.3 eV BE shows an anti-symmetry character about the plane parallel to the [0001] crystallographic direction in the surface.

Yb-intercalated C-60 thin film was prepared in a ultra-high-vacuum system. The binding energies of C 1s, Yb 4f and Yb 4d during the compound formation were studied by x-ray photoemission technique. The stoichiometry of the phase-pure sample was determined by the peak intensities of Yb 4f and C 1s. The result turned to be very near to that for Yb2.75C60 that was first determined for bulk-phase sample by x-ray diffraction measurement. The positions and intensities of the Yb 4f and Yb 4d peaks revealed the charge state of Yb2+ in Yb2.75C60. The C 1s core level for the phase-pure sample shifted towards lower binding energy by approximate to0.5 eV relative to C-60, which exhibited that some Yb 6s electrons transferred from Yb to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital band of C-60. The shift and the FWHM of C 1s x-ray photoemission spectroscopic peak can be used as sample characterization in future researches on Yb/C-60 compounds.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) measurements for oxygen adsorption on Ru(10 (1) over bar0) were performed. The STM images taken on the c(2 x 4)-2O phase showed a c(2 x 4) symmetry, in which four Ru atoms without any oxygen atoms in between were supposed to be imaged as a bright spot. In the c(2 x 4)-2O phase, a domain boundary was identified. In the (2 x 1)p2mg-2O phase, the STM images arrays showed zigzag structures in the [1 (2) over bar 10] direction which is in accordance with the oxygen zigzag chains derived in earlier work for this phase. The UPS spectra showed that the O2p state is located at 5.9 eV in binding energy. Upon oxygen adsorption, DeltaPhi, the change in work function, increases from 0.5 eV in the c(2 x 4)-2O phase to 0.7 eV in the (2 x 1)p2mg-2O phase with respect to the clean Ru(10 (1) over bar0) surface.
