The polarogaphic be haviour of gossypol in HCI-aceton solution has been studied. One wave is obtained in 0.5N HCI-acetone solutin. The half-wave potential is about-0.4V vs.SCE, more positive than that for normal reduction wave of aromatic aldehyde, and it shifts toward more negative value with decreasing acidity and increasing awter content of the solution. The wave height was found to decline markedly with increase of water contetnt and dec-rese of acidity. It has been postulated that in nonaqueous and strong acidic system gossypol rcombines with hydrogen ion to form the corresponding Bronsted acid. As there are positive chargesin the structure, it is more easly reduced at the electrode and shows an abnormal halfwave potential. A second wave can also be observed in water-containing medium with a halfwave potential of about-1.0V vs SCE.
