This paper briefly discusses the mobile ground-based incoherent Doppler wind lidar system, with iodine filters as receiving frequency discriminators, developed by the Ocean Remote Sensing Laboratory, Ocean University of Qingdao, China. The presented result of wind profiles in October and November 2000, retrieved from the combined Mie and Rayleigh backscattering, is the first report to our knowledge of wind measurements in the troposphere by such a system, where the required independent measurement of aerosol-scattering ratio can also be performed. A second iodine vapor filter was used to lock the laser to absolute frequency reference for both wind and aerosol-scattering ratio measurements. Intercomparison experiments of the lidar wind profile measurements were performed with pilot balloons. A mobile incoherent Doppler lidar system has been experimentally demonstrated to be able to transmit reliable single frequency operation laser pulse, even after truck transit and in very high vibration environments. The linewidth of the injection-seeded pulse Nd:YAG laser can be measured by means of an 12 molecular filter. And, lidar validation experiments demonstrated the feasibility and capability of measuring wind field by the Mie-Rayleigh Doppler wind lidar. The uncertainty of measured wind speed is 0.985m/s in the altitude range from 2 to 4km.

This note reports a new type of incoherent pulse laser Doppler lidar velocimeter with iodine molecular filter as a frequency discriminator. Its transmitter subsystem applies a Nd: YAG pulse laser which is injected with a single longitudinal-mode diode pumped continuous seeder laser. The field experiment proved that this velocimeter measurement results are consistent with those measured by photoelectric velocimeter. Measurements of eight different velocities show that the standard deviation is 0.56m/s, the range resolution is 3.75m.

A new incoherent lidar for measuring atmospheric wind using an iodine molecular filter as the frequency discriminator is proposed. A unique feature of the proposed lidar lies in its capability for simultaneous measurement of aerosol mixing ratio, with which the radial wind can be determined uniquely from the lidar return. A preliminary laboratory experiment using a monolithic cw diode-pumped frequency-doubled YAG laser at 532nm and a rotating wheel has been performed. The result of this laboratory experiment have not only demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed wind measurement technique but also determined an intrinsic lidar measurement uncertainty of 12cm/s for a measurement time of 5min.
