A new concept and control scheme, performance-based control is proposed in this paper, which is different from geometry-based control (e.g. CNC) and information-based control(e.g., multi-sensor fusion) and used to control machining processes. Two case studies are offered to show the control scheme applications: (1) a self-learning predictive control algorithm for positioning precision of a keyway milling machine driven by uncontrollable AC motors and (2) a self-learning fuzzy control algorithm for a 2'CNC dividing head used in workshop conditions. The kernel technology of the two cases will be described in detail.

This paper presents a machining mode, named by Virtual/Practical Integrated Material Processing Cell(VPIMPC), which iS based on existing machine and information technology on the shop floor. The purpose of the PaDer is focused on dealing with problems caused by complex machining operations. The configuration of VPIMPC iS given and the characteristics arc pointed out. Two case studies including taper ball end mill CNC grinding and selective laser sintering are offered to veilfy the feasibility and implementation of VPIMPC. The experimental results show that the VPMPC may build a bridge to span the gap between practical environment and virtual environment.
