Based on the treatment that the rectangular function can be expanded into an approximate sum of complex Gaussian functions with finite numbers, an approximate method for calculating the generalized beam propagation factor (M2-factor) is proposed. A truncated flattened Gaussian beam (FGB) and a truncated cosh-Gaussian beam (CGB) are taken as two examples of truncated laser beams. The analytical expressions for the generalized M2-factor are derived. The typical numerical examples are given and compared to those obtained from numerical integration and the known analytical method. A comparison of the results for the ideal beam models with the more realistic ones is discussed.

By using the nonlinear Schro dinger equation model, the inverse problem of the chirp pulse through the Ti:sapphire amplifier was studied, in which the effects of gain narrowing, gain saturation and amplified spontaneous emission on the pulse were considered. The results were useful for the design of the pulse shaping of the ultrashort pulse.

Based on the t reatment that a rectangular function can be expanded into an approximate sum of complex Gaussian functions with finite numbers, the analytical expression for the focusing intensity dist ribution of a laser beam with amplitude modulation (AM) and phase fluctuation (PF) through an aperture lens is derived. The typical numerical examples are given and compared with those obtained from numerically integral calculation. The results show that our method can significantly improve the numerical calculation efficiency.
