Various combinations of chiral ligands and transition metal sources have been used as catalysts in the enantioselective alkynylation of aldehydes and ketones. The results of previous studies and current investigations are reviewed. The factors governing the yields and enantioselectivities are discussed.

A series of binaphthyl-derived amino alcohols were synthesized and used as catalytic ligands in the asymmetricalkynylation of aromatic aldehydes in the presence of a dialkylzinc reagent. The alkynylation of a variety of aromatic aldehydesgave the corresponding chiral propargylic alcohols in 61–93% e.e.

The activation of chiral titanium(IV) complexes with achiral activators, e.g. phenol, is found to provide higher levels of enantioselectivity than those attained with an enantiopure catalyst in the alkynylations of both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes.

A simple and practical method to make chiral propargylicalcohols has been developed: in the presence of a titaniumalkoxide catalyst prepared in situ from titanium tetraisopropoxideand (R)-H8-binaphthol, a variety of aromaticaldehydes were converted to the corresponding chiralpropargylic alcohols with very good enantioselectivities (upto 96.2% e.e.) and yields.
