Boron nitride (BN) nanorings were synthesized using a sulfur vapor assisted solid-state method at 600℃. The rings had typical diameters of 100-300 nm, and the shells were 5-20 nm thick and about 50 nm wide. On the basis of the characterization of X-ray powder diffraction pattern (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurement, the as-prepared product was pure-phase hexagonal BN. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images proved that the nanorings were formed through the coiling of the (002) planes of hexagonal BN. A possible growth process for BN nanorings is suggested.

Gallium nitride (GaN) nanospindles have been synthesized via a solid-state reaction at a low-temperature condition. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed that the synthesized GaN crystallized in a hexagonal structure and displaying spindly particles morphology has an average diameter of 100nm and length of 400nm X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the sample gave the atomic ratio of Ga and N of 1.04:1. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectrum showed that the as-prepared product had a peak emission at 372 nm. The possible formation mechanism of the wurtzite GaN is briefly discussed.

A novel structural induction method has been developed to synthesize cubic boron nitride (cBN) nanocrystals by the reaction of Li3N with BBr3 at very soft conditions (250℃ and 0.3-0.5Mpa). The experimental results show that at reaction temperature of 250℃, the reaction product is only hexagonal boron nitride without cubic gallium phosphide (GaP) nanocrystals being added into the reaction mixture. On the contrast, when cubic GaP nanocrystals were added to the mixture, nearly pure cBN can be obtained under the same reaction conditions. This phenomenon indicated that there was a structural induction effect of GaP to the formation of cBN. As the temperature increased, GaP nanocrystals decomposed rapidly and the structural induction effect disappeared, almost no cBN can be obtained at high temperature. Furthermore, the nucleation and growth of cBN nanocrystals were analyzed by the heterogenous nucleation theory.

In this paper, two-step solvothermal method was adopted to synthesize GaP/GaN nanocomposite materials. The core/shell structure formation was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction pattern (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Meanwhile, optical absorption spectra showed distinct blue shift compared with GaP nanometer materials, which indicated that GaP/GaN core/shell nanometer heterostructures appeared to be formed.

Boron nitride (BN) nanocrystals have been synthesized by the reaction of Li3N and BBr3 in organic solvent. The experimental results indicated that, at low temperature, hexagonal BN (hBN) is the dominant phase in the sample. The content of cubic BN (cBN) increased with temperature, and it reached a maximum at 4801C. As the temperature increased further, the content of cBN decreased, and hBN became the dominant phase again. This phenomenon was discussed briefly in this paper.

AlN nanocrystals have been prepared in organic solvent at atmospheric pressure. The results of measurement on the samples indicated that the sample is a mixture of hexagonal and cubic aluminum nitride (AlN) nanocrystals. All of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy and selective area electron diffraction measurement results have proved the existence of cubic AlN. The photoluminescence spectrum of AlN nanocrystals is composed of a rather intense peak at 475nm and a broad weak peak at 550 nm.

Cubic boron nitride nanorods were prepared at 450℃ by a low pressure benzene thermal synthesis method using BC13 and Li3N as the reactants. The nanorods with various lengths and diameters were observed by transmission electron microscopy. The analysis of X-ray diffrac-tion pattern and electron diffraction pattern revealed that the nanorods are cBN with a lattice constant of 3.62 A. The Fourier transformation infrared spectra showed that the dominant phase is cBN, and the B:N ratio of 1.15:1 can be obtained from the X-ray photoelectron spectrum.

Benzene has been activated by BN nanocrystals at 200 and it takes part in the polymerization reaction at 3-5 atm. The experimental results show that no reaction can be detected when benzene was heated to 200 without BN nanocrystals, whereas when BN was added, benzene can be converted into a series of polymerized products, mainly terphenyl. Moreover, the mechanism of the activation of benzene is briefly discussed on basis of the model of coordination chemistry.
