The curing reaction in the synthesis of polybenzoxazine (PBZ)–montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites was studied by differential scanning calorimetry in the isothermal mode. The experimental data obtained provided the evidence that the isothermal curing behaviour showed autocatalytic characteristics. Owing to the effects of catalysis and barrier of the MMT, the autocatalytic model proposed by Khanna [J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 49 (1993) 319], which includes two rate constants, k1 and k2 as well as two reaction orders, m and n could give fairly good description of curing behaviour in the whole range at relatively high temperatures such as 175, 180℃ even in the stage of diffusion control, which is quite different from that of pure PBZ, in addition with calculations of the activation energy and the overall reaction order.

The influence of Ultrafine Full-Vulcanized Acrylate Powdered Rubber (U FA PR) on the iso thermal crystallization kinetics and noniso thermal crystallization behavior of PA 6 has been studied by means of DSC. The results show that with the introduction of a small amount of U FA PR, the crystallization rate of PA 6 can be increased obviously, and the crystallization temperature range can be augmented and the crystallite size distribution of the crystal can be narrowed down. The change of free energy perpendicular to the crystal nucleus, which has been calculated according to the Hoffman theory, is consistent with the result of Avrami’s equation. The unit surface free energy of the radial-developing crystal spherulite decreases while the crystallization rate of PA 6 increases with the introduction of U FA PR. Meanwhile, it is shown by means of the polarizing micro scope (PLM ) that the crystal size drops down and the number of the crystal grains augments with the addition of U FA PR, which shows that U FA PR can function as anucleating agent.

The compatibilization effect of ethylene-1-octene copolymer grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (POE-g-GMA) as an interface compatibilizer on the mechanical and combustion properties, and the morphology and structures of the cross sections of ammonium polyphosphate (APP)–filled poly(propylene) (PP) were investigated by thermogravimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicated that the toughness of the PP/APP composites increased rapidly with adding POE-g-GMA; the dynamic mechanical spectra revealed that the increase of the toughness was closely related to the peaks of loss modulus (E') and mechanical loss (tan). The improvement of the dispersion of APP in the PP matrix was attributed to the addition of POE-g-GMA; it was found that the interfacial adhesion between the filler and matrix was enhanced when the grafting material was added to the composites. Under such circumstances, the ratio of char formation was increased when the PP composites were heated, although the content of flame retardant was not changed, so the flame retardance of the material was improved. The addition of POE-g-GMA increased the rate of crystallization. At the same time, the degree of crystallinity and the temperature at the beginning of crystallization were decreased, although exerting little influence on the melt behavior of the crystallization of the composites.
